# What Is a Proxy?

## In this article, you will find general information about what a proxy server is used for.

A **proxy server** is a server that connects a user's device to the Internet. When a person requests information, such as a website, the request goes through the proxy server, which sends it to its destination. The proxy server receives the response with the data and passes it back to the user.

Proxy servers are commonly used for the following purposes:

- Increasing privacy.
- Bypassing regional restrictions.
- Monitoring Internet usage.
- Ensuring security by masking the user's IP address and filtering requests.

There are different types of proxy servers: **HTTP**, **HTTPS**, **SOCKS**, and **transparent proxies**, each designed for specific uses and privacy levels.
